Styling for your session, with intention

One of the most common questions I get before a session is, “What should we wear?” — and the truth is, wardrobe plays a huge role in how your final images look and feel.

The right clothing choices help create timeless, cohesive, and emotion-filled photos that won’t feel dated years from now. So here’s a simple, stress-free guide to help you plan outfits you’ll love.

Start with a Soft, Neutral Colour Palette

I always recommend sticking to neutral, earthy tones or soft muted colours. These tones photograph beautifully, complement natural light, and keep the focus on your connection—not your clothing.

Think: creams, whites, soft beiges, warm browns, taupes, sage greens, olive tones, dusty blues, soft blush or muted terracotta.

These colours blend effortlessly with outdoor landscapes and in-home sessions, creating that warm, cohesive look you see throughout my portfolio.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same colour, aim for outfits that complement each other.

Choose a base colour palette and mix tones within it.

For example: One person in cream, another in brown, another in a soft colour or soft pattern.

This adds depth and interest while still feeling cohesive.

Choose Texture and Soft Patterns

Texture adds dimension without overwhelming your photos, and soft, subtle patterns are absolutely welcome when styled thoughtfully.

Beautiful options include: Knits, linens, cotton, flowy fabrics, subtle ribbing or laying, delicate forals or faint patterns.

The key is to keep patterns understated so they complement your images rather than distract from them.

Movement Matters

Outfits that move create magic in photos.

Dresses that flow, fabrics that catch the wind, or layers that shift naturally can add a soft, romantic feel to your images—especially during golden hour.

For little ones, clothing that allows them to move freely is key. Comfort always comes first.

Keep it timeless

Trendy pieces can date your photos quickly. I recommend choosing classic, simple pieces that you’ll still love years from now.

Avoid: nean colours, logos, harsh contrast (like bright white with jet black)

And of course, make sure your clothing isn’t dirty or wrinkly!

Dress for the Season & Location

Think about where your session will take place.

In-home sessions? think soft, cozy neutrals.

Beach Session? Light, airy tones and flowy fabrics.

Field or Forest? Earth tones that blend with nature.

Layers are also a great way to add variety and adapt to changing weather.

When in Doubt, Plan Mom’s Outfit First

If you’re unsure where to start, begin with mom’s outfit. Choose something you feel confident and comfortable in, then build everyone else’s outfits around that.

When you feel good, it shows—and that energy carries through your entire session.

Barefoot or Simple Footwear

Whenever possible, barefoot is always a beautiful option—especially for beach or in-home sessions.

If shoes are needed, keep them simple and neutral. Sandals, boots or soft toned flats are great options.

Avoid bright athletic shoes or anything that pulls attention.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your outfits feel like you. Comfortable, connected, and natural.
